Stuff About Things
A not uncommon question I’m asked in my profession is if I am amenable to receiving gifts. The answer is “absolutely”, with a most gracious and humble smile. I have situated my practice exactly where I want it, and prefer not to receive monetary tips, making a gift from my wishlist (see below) the perfect way to show additional appreciation for our time spent together. While it is never expected, it is kindly remembered and so very special.
I have always been a great lover of “things”. This is not to say that I don’t value experiences and the intangible pleasures of this world, in fact one might say I have spent my life cultivating and sharing these first and foremost, but the ornamental does give such a thrill. Elevating the sensory components of existing. From the fleeting (a perfect glass of vintage red), to the short lived (an exquisite bouquet), to the forever (a diamond cut and set just so), the magic never ceases. I am enraptured.
I was a boisterous and gluttonous child, gleefully trying to taste, touch, do and “have” everything I possibly could. I was the girl with the most cake. A cake well savored and consumed with both hands. Unsurprisingly, I evolved into an adult both highly susceptible to a good time and deeply-eventually- appreciative of the finer things. Inquisitive and devoid of an ability to fake my way through much of anything, I set about early on sampling everything I could, determined to discover my favorites based on nothing more than my own heart. E.g.: It turns out that sports cars set too low to the ground hurt my butt, but I appreciate their engineering. Caviar is “meh”, but I do love oysters and foie gras and bless me, even blindfolded, I will always pick the most expensive wine in the house.
I am an appreciator of well developed products that were created and then perfected to enhance our every day lives bringing us comfort, ease and inspiration. I do not pursue belongings because of name brand or trend, but rather cultivate my surroundings and the things I touch and use, based on how quality made they are and how much joy they bring me. Not unlike the people who I choose to surround myself. Things you want to take care that will stay with you for a long time.
Trading interests and passions is a glorious part of being with another person and I have learned so much I might not have otherwise, inquiring about the things other people value. Ive been given in depth lessons about classic and contemporary cars, watches and sound equipment. Things I did not know much about, but my suitors did and shared their knowledge because I inquired about the handsome things they owned. In turn I’ve enjoyed sharing my passions for wine and spirits, house plants, and personal wellness related everything.
Gift giving is an art, designed not just to show thoughtfulness and generosity, but also your relationship with the person to whom you’re giving. How well do you them? Their needs. Desires. Where they’re at in their lives. Do they need something practical or whimsical? Love takes all forms, how beautiful is it that gifts are both solid and intangible in form.
